ISO/IEC 42001, the standard for Artificial Intelligence Management System, and ISO/IEC 27001 the standard for Information Security, Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection, have many fundamentals in common.

There are controls in ISO/IEC 27001 that are also applicable in ISO/IEC 42001, such as access controls and protections of personally identifiable information (PII). While ISO/IEC 27001 provides the governance framework to protect an organization’s information, ISO/IEC 42001 builds on that foundation to focus on specific risks relevant to AI technologies and systems and, importantly, ensure AI systems considers ethical impacts.

Of course, ISO/IEC 42001 is a harmonized standard and thus is structured the same as most ISO management system standards, making integration with ISO/IEC 27001 easier.
