Overview
The pet food market is consistently growing, offering an increasingly extensive range of product types and complex recipes.
Similar to human food, pet food now caters to more specific needs such as dietary preferences and the management of food intolerances and allergies.
In some cases, it can be challenging to confirm the product’s composition or its primary animal protein source. This raises important questions:
We will present a summary of our findings from using Next Generation Sequencing to identify the DNA sources in a wide range of processed cat and dog food products. Our goal is to assess the accuracy of product labeling and the perceived content to see if it matches our testing results.
We will also explore trends in novel proteins (newly introduced to the market) and the use of established protein sources for new target species. Our discussion will also cover material characterization, in vitro and preclinical safety studies, target animal safety, and key points on meeting regulations.
