Brave New Films is a non-profit media organization that produces and shares documentaries and short films at no cost to learning institutions in order to facilitate learning, stir discussions and promote action on pressing social justice issues in our country. Our series Following Their Lead: Youth in Action highlights fourteen youth-led advocacy groups in their own words.
This presentation intends on offering teachers this series along with additional learning materials as a resource for dealing with the repercussions of social inequalities with their students. Youth witness inequality globally, in their communities and their own lives. The presentation demonstrates ways in which educators can move their students towards civil engagement for meaningful social change. We want students to feel they have a say about what goes on in their lives. When students understand that they have the tools to change systems around them, regardless of age, it promotes agency, self-awareness, confidence and leadership. Personal agency provides a holistic mechanism for students attempting to cope with social inequality.
