37 million Americans have kidney disease, and nearly 700,000 have end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Of those with ESRD, more than 500,000 are on active dialysis and more than 120,000 new ESRD cases are diagnosed each year. Financially, this disease represents a significant burden, with total Medicare spending on both chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ESRD at $120 billion in 2017, representing 33.8% of total Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) spending. Despite this high level of spending, outcomes for dialysis patients are poor, with one in six dialysis patients dying in the first year after starting treatment.
CVS Kidney Care, a CVS Health company, is dedicated to bringing an end-to-end approach to kidney care. CVS Kidney Care is developing offerings that address the various, progressive phases of CKD and ESRD with the goal of improving survival rates and quality of life. And we believe taking a proactive and more comprehensive approach to kidney care will help reduce the overall health care costs associated with kidney disease.
