We will also explore possible determinants of the epidemic and policy responses to the epidemic. For example, the 2010 expansion of the Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act (MHPAEA) opened up the substance abuse treatment market to fraud and abuse in ways never before seen in that industry. The forms of fraud and abuse uncovered contributed, in some ways, to fueling the opioid crisis in some U.S. regions.
Finally, this webinar will discuss a range of future targets in areas of substance abuse prevention, treatment, and policy, including wider use of Narcan to prevent overdose deaths, the adoption of MAT as standard care for people with opioid use disorders, and increasing acceptance for syringe exchange programs to reduce the infectious disease harms associated with needle-sharing.
