Taking Social-Emotional Learning Schoolwide: The Formative Five Success Skills for Students and Staff
What should be a priority in schools? Where should teachers and principals focus their efforts? Test scores are important, but we should be developing good people. Although we need to teach students the three Rs, scholastic skills should be the floor of our expectations, not the ceiling. That's true today and will be even more true tomorrow because so many tasks—routine and complex—will be done by computers. Our students will need human literacy, or social-emotional learning (SEL) skills, in order to be successful in life outside and beyond the school building.
In this webinar, Thomas R. Hoerr, author of Taking Social-Emotional Learning Schoolwide: The Formative Five Success Skills for Students and Staff, will show how school culture can be a tool to teach the Formative Five success skills: empathy, self-control, integrity, embracing diversity, and grit. He will explain how these success skills are identified and cultivated and will give examples of how teachers and principals can use the elements of school culture, from vision and mission to people and place, to weave SEL into the fabric of the school.
