Cannabis is difficult to analyze because of its chemical diversity, but more importantly the wide concentration ranges of its constituents. This chemical diversity can be very important in determining its utility, potency and medicinal effectiveness. A powerful, nontargeted discovery technique—gas chromatography- and two-dimensional gas chromatography paired with time-of-flight mass spectrometry—was used to determine a wide range of constituents including cannabinoids, terpenes, terpenoids, noncannabinoid phenols, nitrogenous compounds, flavonoids, and contaminants such as residual solvents and pesticides.
