The opioid epidemic didn’t happen overnight and the solution to it won’t either. In this session, Tron Emptage, the chief clinical officer for Optum, will join with Ramona Tanabe, the executive vice president and counsel for Workers' Compensation Research Institute (WCRI) to discuss the history of opioids in healthcare and workers’ compensation and how we got to where we are today. They will discuss several opioid controls including CDC guidelines, MED levels, medication formularies and opioid prescribing limits that are in place to curb the epidemic and we’ll look at recent data to see if they are working. They will also review a holistic approach to pain management and discuss the next medication/treatment challenge for the workers’ compensation industry.
