Lockout Permits: Driving Accountability When Procedures Are Not Enough
Event Date: October 30, 2018 at 12:00 pm Central Time (1:00 pm Eastern Time, 10:00 am Pacific Time)
We’ll discuss situations where the absence of good technical information to isolate and secure equipment requires an accountability system to document the steps taken to control hazardous energy in complex equipment.

This includes checklist systems, formal safe work permits, work in remote sites on other people’s equipment, contractor accountability, and work on unique combinations of equipment not previously documented by a lockout procedure.

Drawing from ANSI Z244.1 (2016) guidance, we’ll discuss the ANSI best practice approach to managing lockout using a permit-based system and real-world examples of how permits can be applied to successfully document energy control procedures and ensure personnel accountability.

We’ll review how confined space, line break and safe work permits all can include the requirements for lockout. We’ll also explore lockout permit formats that can be used specifically in isolating unique and challenging equipment and processes, and how contractors can participate in lockout activities that can be facilitated by a permit system.

Participants will learn how permits can be a valuable method to exchange necessary information, and demonstrate that compliant practices both are expected and were applied.

What you’ll learn:

• The role of lockout permits to document safe work activities.
• The checklist method of documenting lockout activity on generic machinery.
• The enhancement of contractor management through this information exchange process.
• On-the-spot ability to document lockout activity for previously non-considered equipment
• A review methodology to impact auditing requirements and continuous improvement efforts.
