Unmanned Aircraft and Safety Certification

Autonomous aircraft -- from hand-thrown unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to high-flying jet-powered platforms are close to being certified to fly in multiple sections of the national airspace. The main hurdles remaining are safety related such as properly certifying their hardware and software for flight and convincing the public as well as commercial pilots they are safe even with certified equipment. Compliance with FAA safety standards such as DO-178 B and C for flight critical software and DO-254 for hardware is moving forward as the technological expertise is there.
