Analysis of Phosphate and Manganese Degradation Products in Aged Lithium-Ion Batteries

Rechargeable, manganese-based, lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are environmentally friendly, have a good safety record, and can be made at a lower cost than other metal-based LiBs. However, they have a shorter lifetime. A common source of battery failure includes dissolution of a manganese-based cathode and deposition of electrolyte degradation products on the anode.

Here, the experts will provide an overview of an ongoing investigation and introduce new findings aimed at identifying ionic manganese and phosphate degradation products, and elucidating their mechanisms. Aqueous extract of the LiB degradation products on the anode surface were analyzed using a Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-2100 Integrated IC System tandem with a Thermo Scientific Q Exactive Hybrid Quadrupole-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer.

A comparative analysis of aged LiB samples and permanganate standard by ion chromatography—high-resolution mass spectrometry (IC-HRMS) and direct-injection HRMS provided mixed results. Direct-injection HRMS results showed the presence of permanganate from the standard but the absence of it (or other manganese-oxide-containing complexes) from the aged samples, suggesting an ionic manganese complex of unknown composition. Results from IC-HRMS showed an absence of permanganate for both the aged LiB samples and permanganate standard, suggesting formation of a different ionic manganese complex from the above direct-injection HRMS method.

Results from the analysis of electrolyte degradation products by IC-HRMS show the presence of phosphate and carboxylate products not apparent using a lower resolution mass spectrometer. These products include phosphate esters and dicarboxylic acids.
