Polymer Characterization Using Multi-Detector Ambient and High Temperature Gel Permeation Chromatography

Since its inception, the main utility of ambient and high temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has been to determine the molar mass averages and distributions of natural and synthetic polymers. Over the years, as the complexity of polymers has increased, the ability to obtain accurate and precise distributions of both their physical and chemical properties has piloted a new era of polymer analysis: multi-detector GPC. Here we will discuss polymer characterization via single- and multi-detector ambient and high temperature GPC, namely, the coupling of GPC to various combinations of RI, UV-vis, multi-angle light scattering (MALS), and differential viscometry (VISC). The addition of a MALS detector to a single-detector GPC system allows for the determination of not only the absolute, calibrant-independent, molar mass, and molar mass distributions but also provides size information.When coupled to the GPC/MALS/RI, a viscometer can provide molar mass averages and distributions via universal calibration in addition to the intrinsic viscosity and macromolecular size of the analyte. Lastly, we will provide an overview of both ambient and high temperature multi-detector technologies as well as examples of polymer characterization of natural and synthetic polymers.

Amandaa K. Brewer obtained her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Roanoke College, with a minor in mathematics. She earned her PhD in analytical chemistry from The Florida State University under the direction of Dr. André M. Striegel. Her graduate research focused on using multi-detector hydrodynamic chromatography with multi-angle static light scattering, quasi-elastic light scattering, differential viscometry, and differential refractometry as a method for characterizing particles and ultra-high molar mass polymers. Amandaa joined Tosoh Bioscience LLC in March 2011. During her career she has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, encyclopedia and review articles, presented scientific presentations at national and international meetings, as well as developed Tosoh’s “Back to Basics GPC Training Course for Polymer Analysis.” Amandaa’s research at Tosoh is focused on developing applications for the EcoSEC GPC System and GPC columns. She also oversees the technical support and marketing of the EcoSEC GPC System.
