Tech Insider: Image Sensors for Mobile Devices: Next Generation Pixel Technology

Image sensor technology advancements in smartphone and tablet cameras have made taking quality pictures and video easier than ever for consumers.

The performance of a smartphone camera’s image sensor has improved by more than 4 times in the past six years.  Recent pixel technology breakthroughs, such as Samsung Electronics’ ISOCELL technology, will only continue to fuel this explosion. Experts from Samsung’s image sensor business, one of whom was directly responsible for the development of this breakthrough technology, will share with the audience how ISOCELL:

  • Decreases crosstalk by approximately 30%, resulting in higher color fidelity 
  • Increases the full well capacity by 30%, leading to greater dynamic range 
  • Features a 20% wider chief ray, reducing the height of the camera module

Webinar attendees will also learn about specific challenges encountered in developing ISOCELL and the solutions that will benefit camera module designs and, ultimately, the end camera applications. Samsung has been on the cutting edge of image sensor technology since 2002, helping to drive the mobile photography and videography revolution with this very small – but very important – component.

PRESENTER: Jungchak Ahn, Vice president of Samsung Electronics’ image sensor product development
In 1999, he joined Image development group as a starting member in Samsung Image business. Since then, he has been successfully developing every generation of pixel (5.6um to 1.12um) for Samsung CMOS image sensor, including FSI, lightguide, and BSI sensors. He published 20 technical papers and filed 40 U.S. patents.
He had served as a committee member in ISSCC (International Solid State Circuits Conference) from 2009 to 2011 and is currently a technical committee member for IISW (International Image Sensor Workshop) from 2011.  Dr. Ahn received B.S. degree, M.S. degree, and Ph. D degree in electronic & electrical engineering from POSTECH (Pohang University of Science & Technology), Pohang, Korea, in 1993, 1995, and 1999, respectively.

PRESENTER: Marty Agan, Director Engineering in the System LSI business of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. 
He focuses on working with image sensor customers and ecosystem partners to understand their applications and imaging needs and collaborates with the engineering team to meet those needs. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, and MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles.
