Editors’ Series: Faster Gas Chromatography in Practice |

Increasing the speed of a capillary gas chromatographic separation is of importance in process control and high throughput analysis. Moreover, speed is economically advantageous for all routine analyses that are performed in large series. In each of these applications there are various options for speeding-up the GC separation. Narrow-bore columns can be used, hydrogen carrier gas or vacuum outlet conditions can be applied, fast temperature programming is an option etc. Which method to select depends strongly on the application under study. Fast GC works, but only if the correct route is selected!
In this web seminar, an overview of the various routes for faster chromatography will be given. Next, a system for classification of chromatograms is described. These two items are then combined to arrive at a convenient method for selecting the most appropriate route for speeding up specific GC applications. The practical consequences of implementing these options are discussed and the instrumental requirements are outlined. Applications of the various methods for faster GC are given. The lecture is of interest for all GC and GC-MS users interested in faster separations.
