Vacuum system designers have traditionally relied on a mix of experience and semi empirical methods when assessing low pressure gas flows inside vacuum systems. Until recently vacuum practitioners have been held back by the absence of commercially available tools that are easy to use. The use of simulation tools in the design process can reduce time to market, improve the designer’s understanding of the product and reduce prototyping costs. COMSOL has introduced a range of software tools to model gas flows inside vacuum systems in the slip, transitional flow and molecular flow regimes. Available within the COMSOL Multiphysics environment, these tools benefit from the CAD and meshing capabilities of the platform, along with its customized modeling capabilities. With COMSOL, the simulation of vacuum flows in arbitrarily complex geometries is within the reach of all vacuum practitioners.
