Data Security: Compliance and Enforcement in the Hospitality Industry

Following an expansive and expensive civil investigation by the Enforcement Division of the US Federal Trade Commission, the agency filed suit against a global hospitality company and certain subsidiaries for alleged data security failures that led to three data breaches at 45 individual hotels in less than two years. The FTC alleges that these failures led to fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, millions of dollars in fraud loss, and the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia.

This high profile enforcement action provides an excellent context and occasion for examining data security risks to brand, customer data, and to litigation and enforcement activity by state and federal authorities, or increasingly private parties. This webcast reviews:
  • Data Breach Risks specific to the hospitality industry
  • Enforcement and litigation risks and developments
  • Breach response steps
  • Incident response planning
  • Trends and developments, including internet crimes, global notification considerations, foreign sovereign espionage and SEC Reporting
