Abandon the Craftsman Approach. Storage administrators need to discard some long-help myths about storage management and adopt new ways of thinking that enable them to handle significantly greater capacity.

Adopt software tools. Computers can now provide unprecedented guidance on storage optimization so that people don’t have to. Policy-based management, smart provisioning and automated tiering are among the innovations that are powering leaps in productivity.

Consider self-service portals. Companies are now exploring the self-service capabilities of private and public clouds. However, organizations need to adopt policies and limits in place to create an atmosphere of trust that enables efficient self-provisioning for storage.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tony Pearson is a Master Inventor and Senior Managing Consultant in the IBM Software and Systems Group. A 25-year veteran of IBM, he has worked in development, marketing and customer care positions for numerous storage hardware and software products.

Tony holds 19 IBM patents for inventions on storage hardware and software products, and has been named an IBM Master Inventor. In his current role at the IBM Tucson Executive Briefing Center, he presents briefings on storage topics covering the entire system storage product line, as well as Tivoli storage software products.

Tony writes the “Inside System Storage” blog, which is read by thousands of clients, sales reps and IBM business partners every week. It blog was rated one of the top 10 blogs of 2006 for the IT storage industry by Network World and continues to be the third most active blog on IBM DeveloperWorks. He is also the author of the Inside System Storage series of books.
