Coffee Break Chat: OVUM and IBM on System Engineering

Date: Thursday, November 17, 2011
2:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM PT / 18:00 GMT (Duration: 1 hour)
Software is not only changing the nature of products, but across many product industry sectors, it is arguably accounting for the lion’s share of innovation. This has placed great stress on the systems engineering process that is key to engineered product development, and the professional roles, processes, and tooling that is deployed. Software-based product intelligence raises the degree of interdependence between mechanical, electrical, and logical design. Additionally, it places new stresses on supply chain-driven product segments that must balance supplier lead times with the need to leverage the rapid innovation of the high tech sector.

While there is no silver bullet solution for process change and tooling that will apply to all product industries, the common thread is the need for a federated, loosely-coupled approach that addresses the needs of each product engineering discipline, while still ensuring that all players read from the same sheet of music. This presentation will feature Tony Baer, Senior Analyst at Ovum Software, and Dominic Tavossoli, Director of Marketing at IBM, who will discuss the challenges and solutions that product engineering organizations within the automotive, aerospace, defense, and electronics industries must address as they become more software-driven.

Who should Attend: VP and Senior Management of Systems Engineering, Product Development
and Software Engineering. Management, System Engineers, etc.

Tony Baer, Principal Analyst

Tony Baer leads Ovum's research on the application lifecycle for complex systems, middleware, and data integration. Working in concert with other members of Ovum's software group, Tony's research covers the full lifecycle from design and development to deployment and management for engineered products.
A noted authority on software development platforms and integration architecture for nearly 20 years, he began his career in manufacturing and product engineering. Prior to joining Ovum, he was an independent analyst whose company onStrategies delivered software development and integration tools to vendors with technology assessment and market positioning services. He also led computerwire's CIO Agenda and Computer Finance end user best practices research services.
Dominic Tavassoli, Program Director

Dominic has 20 years experience in systems engineering, advanced software development and delivery, and process improvement around CMMI, Agile and Application Lifecycle Management, and has authored over fifteen papers on these topics. He is currently working on solutions for the next wave of Smart Products and cross-industry ecosystems, which meet business requirements for innovation while achieving compliance, quality and cost objectives.

Prior to IBM, Dominic was Vice President of Product Marketing at Telelogic, a leading provider in Enterprise Lifecycle Management, ran the French operation for Ascent Logic Corporation, the pioneer in Requirements Management, Systems Engineering and Enterprise Architecture, and drove the deployment of best practices for systems and software at MBDA.

Chris Ruoff, Senior Manager for Sales and Channel Development

Chris Ruoff is the Senior Manager for Sales and Channel Development at the IEEE Computer Society. Prior to the IEEE, Chris enjoyed an 18-year career at Intel Corporation where he worked as a Marketing Engineer, Sales Engineer, and Business Development Manager. Chris has also started up and managed 2 independent consulting organizations. He holds an MBA from Pepperdine University and is currently located in Southern California.
