Tier 4: Past, Present, and Future Technologies for Meeting Regulatory Challenges

Thursday, October 20, 2011: Noon ET

Abstract:
With 2011 Tier 4 Interim engines currently in the field proving their worth not only in terms of meeting increasingly stringent emissions regulations but also exceeding efficiency and productivity expectations, engineers throughout the off-highway industry are looking to finalize just what technologies will go into future diesels to meet 2014 Tier 4 Final regulations. Panelists will discuss some of the challenges that presented themselves in meeting T4I and what technologies were used to mitigate and master those challenges. While many of the engine and aftertreatment technologies used in T4I are expected to also prove vital for 2014, some may either not make the cut or have to undergo marked improvements. Panelists will discuss why meeting T4F has forced engineers and designers to focus with an almost microscopic intensity on the most esoteric components of the engine and aftertreatment, and, simultaneously, on the equipment itself, as the optimization of every vehicle system becomes a critical part of the ultimate solution. Also, what is next? Panelists will give some insight into what the next set of rules and regulations may look like for the off-highway industry and some of the technological solutions that may follow.

Industry Expert Participants:

Jason Bieneman, Product Expert - Piston Rings, Mahle Corp.
Jason Bieneman is a Piston Ring Product Expert at Mahle Corp., where he leads the development of piston ring solutions for OEMs in Tier 4 interim and final applications. In this capacity, he has an intimate knowledge of OEM emission challenges, the progress in meeting them so far, and where we go from here. His experience spans applications in stationary power, off-highway, and on-highway. He has co-authored and presented a paper at the SAE World Congress and is a U.S. patent holder.

Dr. Georg Hüthwohl, Managing Director, Albonair
As Managing Director of Albonair GmbH, Dr. Georg Hüthwohl is responsible for the technical area – development, production, and quality. Before he started at Albonair, he was managing director of PUREM Abgassysteme, a 100% subsidiary of Daimler AG, where he was responsible for developing the Euro 4 and Euro 5 SCR systems. After completing his doctorate in engineering at the RWTH Aachen University, he worked at FEV Motorentechnik as team manager for exhaust aftertreatment systems and at HJS Fahrzeugtechnik as member of the executive board and as head of development.

Charles Throckmorton, Principal Application Engineer, Sauer-Danfoss
Charles Throckmorton is Principal Application Engineer at Sauer-Danfoss. His areas of expertise are industrial hydraulic products, mobile hydraulic products, and gear products. His career, which spans 42 years, began in Design Engineering. He then held leadership roles in Engineering, Quality, and Plant Operations. For the last 12 years, he has been actively involved in Systems and Applications Engineering projects.
