SUMMARY Each day in the United States as many as 10 injuries requiring hospitalizations are attributed to arc-flash incidents (Capelli-Schellpfeffer, Inc.). There are numerous potential causes to these dangerous conditions associated with the release of energy – and while each potential cause has systems in place to prevent such a situation (industry standards, safety practices, mitigation techniques, etc.), these incidents still continue to take place. Because of this, a failproof additional level of protection is necessary to fully protect personnel from the effects of these accidents when one or more of these systems breaks down and an arc-flash accident occurs. With the adoption of remote operating equipment, specifically remote racking and remote switching systems, many facilities are fulfilling their obligation to stay compliant with updated safety standards and realizing the benefits of increased worker safety at more affordable costs when compared to other arc-flash mitigation techniques. Recent advances in the abilities of these products as well as increased offerings to cover many types and styles of equipment means that remote operation products are now a realistic and practical option to consider when addressing arc-flash safety.
