Unconscious Bias Webcast Series

Did you know that....

...NBA referees call fouls on players of the opposite race significantly more than on those of the same race as themselves? (Stanford & Wharton study)

...people believe others whose accents resemble their own significantly more than those who sound different, with just one exception? (University of Tel Aviv and University of Chicago study)

...people tend to hire candidates who sit on the side that matches their dominant hand more than those who sit on the other side? (Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics study)

…travelers who are in business attire get through security clearance at airports 47% faster than those who are more casually dressed? (Cook Ross study)

Why do these surprisingly obvious incidents of inequity happen even with well-intentioned people? Because our brains are programmed to leverage pattern recognition and informed judgment to make spot decisions with limited information. We use our instincts and rely on heuristics 99.999996% of the time. And it is not a bad thing. Developing our ability to process information and generate solutions in an instant can be invaluable to our organizations, to our teams, to our careers. However, there is an insidious and pervasive cost for this basic instinct. It is unconscious bias.

Unconscious bias in our decision making impacts day to day issues like hiring, mentoring, promoting, staffing, and developing people, and engaging with clients much more significantly than we might realize. A recent computer simulation found that a 1% bias in performance ratings across lower levels of an organization can result in a 30% difference in the composition of the top leadership team.
