Assuming regulations are in place – allowing Wi-Fi, LTE, and other wireless communications over TV White Space (TVWS) – spectrum harvesting could be the answer to the impending bandwidth crunch. These industry leading panelists will discuss the future of the space, key use-cases for this technology, and what will be required to make spectrum harvesting a viable solution without interference to incumbents and peer users.

SPEAKER: Angelo Cuffaro, Interdigital
Angelo Cuffaro leads InterDigital’s research and system design for Dynamic Spectrum, Future Wireless Internet, and Security technologies, with particular focus in Shared Spectrum solutions. Since joining the company in 2001, he has been involved in a wide range of projects, including leadership of 3G (HSPA) modem development, design and characterization of 3G TDD and FDD systems, design and implementation of 802.11 RRM, and coordination of the standards strategy for cognitive radio technologies. Angelo came to InterDigital from Ericsson Communications where he was a Systems Lead on both 2G and 3G technology development, which lead to the first W-CDMA operation in the PCS band in North America. He holds both Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He is an inventor of 52 granted U.S. patents, and he or his team has been awarded several InterDigital President and CTO awards for Innovation.
SPEAKER: Shih MO, President & CEO, Aviacomm
Mr. Shih Mo is an expert in Wireless Communications with a career spanning over two decades. Prior to Aviacomm, Shih Mo was the founder and CEO of RedDot Wireless Inc, a founding member of Malibu Networks, and Chief Architect at Quantum Corp where he was named a Quantum Fellow in 2000. He has successfully led developments of numerous baseband and RF integrated circuits for WiMAX and WLAN, and has extensive experience in Software Defined Radios. Additionally, Shih Mo participated in the development of the 802.11 and 802.16 wireless standards. Shih Mo was a Ph.D. Candidate at University of Southern California. He is the owner of several US patents and the author of numerous technical papers. Shih Mo also is an active participant on the Board of Directors of the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance.
SPEAKER: Peter Flynn, Business Development Manager, Texas Instruments
Peter Flynn currently serves as business development manager in Texas Instruments’ Communication Infrastructure business, focused on emerging wireless markets which will leverage cognitive radio technologies. He has over 20 years of experience developing network solutions covering the spectrum of embedded processor applications for core network and wireless infrastructure. He is a leading proponent of open spectrum in the White Space Alliance (WSA), an active participant in standards development in IEE802 working groups and a founding member of the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA). Peter has a BS in applied math, engineering and physics from the University of Wisconsin and a MS in telecommunications and computer systems from George Washington University.
SPEAKER: Dr. Mark A. McHenry
Mark McHenry has more than 25 years of experience in communications system design and is considered a leading authority in cognitive radio technology and RF spectrum issues. Mark was a co-founder and CTO of San Diego Research Center, Inc., a wireless research and development company that was sold to Argon ST. Prior to that, he was a program manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). He is an appointed member of Department of Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee (CSMAC) and served as an advisor to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). Honors include Engineer of the Year by the D.C. Area Council of Engineering and Architectural Studies, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Award for Outstanding Achievement, and the OSD Award for Exceptional Public Service. Mark earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S.E.E. from University of Colorado, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology.
MODERATOR: Dexter Johnson
Dexter Johnson is the author of IEEE Spectrum’s online blog The Nanoclast. He has researched and written reports and analysis in the areas of nanotechnology, sensors, IT, advanced manufacturing and economic trends within a number of different industries. He has been the program director for international conferences in the areas of telecommunications, digital content delivery and nanotechnology. In addition to his work at IEEE Spectrum, Dexter is a senior analyst with Cientifica, a UK-based business intelligence company for emerging technologies.
