Everyone does it.  Chances are, you’ve done it.  At the end of every season, clearance pricing and markdowns are a necessary evil in order to sell through your remaining inventory, making room for next season’s merchandise.  It’s a standard practice, and few, if any, question its effectiveness.  In the process, retailers often leave dollars behind by discounting in a way that may be giving dollars away unnecessarily or selling at a price that prevents the proper sell-through.  In a hyper competitive environment, moving inventory while maximizing margins are critical for retailers to drive overall financial performance.

To address this issue, leading retailers should consider:

  1. Markdown analytics that incorporates sell-through and inventory at the store level
  2. A tailored markdown cadence for each store and item that can maximize margin while moving through merchandise at the most effective volume and price intersection points
  3. Clearly defined “out dates” combined with a tailored markdown cadence can maximize margin while moving through product
  4. Prevention of “layering” additional promotional dollars unnecessarily to clearance pricing

Join Deloitte and IBM as we discuss how integrating in-season (promotions) and end-of season (clearance) pricing decisions can reduce the amount of excess inventory that has to be heavily marked down at the end of each season, thus improving your product margins and increasing your revenues.  Clearance / markdowns will never go away but using customer insight to drive in-season promotions can optimize your markdown strategies, making your seasons more profitable.  Register for this webinar to learn more.
