Evolving environmental regulations are influencing the development and application of erosion control technologies. Historically, products and solutions have emerged through trial and error in the field, with limited engineering data and many “rules of thumb.” Hard armor has been the standard remedy for addressing extreme hydraulic conditions. The presenter will discuss a no-maintenance, vegetated, NPDES-compliant alternative to rock rip rap that has demonstrated day one performance — the ScourStop transition mat technology. The webcast’s emphasis will be on particulars of multi-year hydraulic testing at Colorado State University, which confirm performance results that meet or exceed those of conventional hard armor solutions for scour outlet protection.
