HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will host a free Web conference on evidence-based hospital design. Leaders in medicine and health care design will share personal stories about how evidence-based hospital design helped them create safer and more effective facilities that enhance patient safety, improve the quality of care, increase workforce satisfaction, and reduce the cost of care.
The event will also feature AHRQ’s new Transforming Hospitals DVD that makes the case for evidence-based hospital design in both new construction and hospital renovations projects. Order a free DVD now.

 | Patrick A. Charmel Patrick A. Charmel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Griffin Hospital and its parent organization, Griffin Health Services Corporation, has been associated with Griffin since 1979, when he served as a student intern while attending Quinnipiac University. After serving in a number of administrative positions, he became President in 1998. As President of Griffin Health Services Corporation, he is also the Chief Executive Officer of Planetree Inc., a subsidiary corporation. Planetree is a not-for-profit organization that supports an alliance of over 125 premier hospitals located across the United States and in the Netherlands and Canada that are committed to patient empowerment and the delivery of patient centered care. During his tenure, he has positioned Griffin Hospital as an award-winning, innovative organization, recognized as an industry leader in providing personalized, humanistic, consumer-driven health care in a healing environment. Under his leadership, Griffin has appeared on the Fortune Magazine list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America for nine consecutive years, was named a 2007 remier/CareScience National Quality Leader and received the 2005 and 2007 Health Grades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. Griffin was also a recipient of the Total Benchmark Solution’s Top 100 Quality Award in 2006 and was named one of the Solucient 100 Top Performance Improvement Leader Hospitals in 2007. Charmel is a co-author of the book “Putting Patients First” which received the American College of Healthcare Executive’s Health Care book of the year award in 2004.

 | D. Kirk Hamilton D. Kirk Hamilton, FAIA, FACHA is an Associate Professor of Architecture and a Fellow and Associate Director of the Center for Health Systems & Design at Texas A&M University. His professional degree in architecture is from the University of Texas and his master’s degree in organization development is from Pepperdine. The focus of his academic research is the relationship of evidence-based health facility design to measurable organizational performance. Hamilton is a board certified healthcare architect and a founding principal emeritus of WHR Architects with 30 years of active practice. Hamilton is a past president of the American College of Healthcare Architects and the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health. He serves on the board of The Center for Health Design and was a founder of the Coalition for Health Environments Research. A leading proponent of evidence-based design, Hamilton speaks frequently on healthcare design topics and is the author, co-author, or editor of numerous articles and three books. He is co-editor of the new peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary Health Environments Research & Design Journal.

 | Cheryl Herbert Cheryl Herbert began her career as a registered nurse with a Bachelors Degree from Capital University (Columbus, OH) and has worked in healthcare management for more than 20 years. She obtained her Masters in Business Administration from Ashland University (Ashland, OH). In 1998, she joined OhioHealth (Columbus, OH) and provided
administrative oversight for construction projects at two of the system’s outlying hospitals. In March 2004, Cheryl was chosen to head planning efforts for Dublin (Ohio) Methodist Hospital. Opened in January 2008, this facility promises to bring a new model of patient care, provided in a unique environment, to central Ohio. |

 | Owen Samuels Owen Samuels graduated cum laude from SUNY Albany and then received his M.D. from SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn with distinguished honors in Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship and residency training in medicine and neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. Upon completion of his residency and fellowship training he developed a new critical care division at Emory University Hospital for the treatment of acute neurological and neurosurgical brain injury patients. He is currently the Director of the Division of Neuro Sciences Critical Care at Emory University Hospital and Chairman of the Critical Care Committee. Dr Samuels is a nationally recognized leader in neurointensive care and acute brain injury and current founding member of the Board of Directors of the Neurocritical Care Society. Over the past 10 years he has been committed to the development of a patient and family centered critical care practice with emphasis on end of life and ethical dimensions of critical illness. |

 | Clifford Goodman Clifford Goodman, PhD, is a Senior Vice President at The Lewin Group. He has more than 25 years of experience in health care evaluation, including in evidence-based health care, health economics, and studies pertaining to health care innovation, diffusion, and payment. Dr. Goodman has directed the Evidence-based Practice Centers Coordinating Center at The Lewin Group, for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He directs Lewin’s multi-task contract for AHRQ on knowledge transfer of health services research, which included production of the Transforming Hospitals DVD. He is a nationally recognized health policy issues moderator and expert panel facilitator. |
